The British Superbike Championship’s Showdown phase rolled into Donington Park for Round Ten, and it was championship leader Kyle Ryde who stamped his authority on day one, heading Pre‑Qualifying to claim the first direct passage into Q2. Here’s how the action unfolded across the Leicestershire circuit.

Ryde Leads the Charge — Lap Record Pace on Day One

From the moment the session got underway, Ryde looked comfortable and fast aboard the Nitrous Coin / Nitrous Competitions machine. He steadily improved his lap times as the track came to him, and with ten minutes remaining, he delivered the standout effort of the day — a 1’26.863s — putting him clear at the top and already within touching distance of the existing circuit record. It was a statement ride from the man who sits at the summit of the standings, sending a clear message to his title rivals as the business end of the season gets underway.

Showdown Contenders Fill the Top Seven

Behind Ryde, the battle among the six title contenders took shape. The top seven positions were dominated by riders still in the running for the crown, with each looking to lay down an early marker:

  • Ryan Vickers was the leading Honda rider in fifth, proving consistent and quick on the opening day.
  • Danny Kent took sixth on the Cheshire Mouldings Yamaha. Fresh off becoming a father recently, Kent managed his runs perfectly — setting his fastest lap early in the session, which means he has saved a fresh set of tyres to use in Saturday’s decisive sessions.
  • Leon Haslam secured seventh for Moto Rapido Ducati — a solid recovery after a difficult day. The veteran was the final rider to get out on track across all sessions, with technical issues and setup changes disrupting his running throughout Friday. He managed just a handful of laps, but made them count to secure his place as the last of the Showdown names in direct Q2 qualification.

The remaining Showdown contenders — Bradley Ray, Scott Redding and the rest — also occupied the upper reaches of the timesheets, keeping the title fight tight right from the start of the weekend.

Mid‑Field Battles — Skinner, Iddon and Jackson in the Top Ten

Outside the immediate title group, there was plenty of competition for the remaining Q2 spots:

  • Rory Skinner was eighth fastest on the second Cheshire Mouldings Yamaha, continuing his consistent run of strong qualifying performances.
  • Christian Iddon took ninth for Sencat Yamaha, edging clear of the chasing pack.
  • Lee Jackson rounded out the top ten for DAO Racing, securing his progress to the next stage with a solid final effort in Pre‑Qualifying.

Tension at the Cut‑Off Line — Irwin Holds On, Talbot Misses Out

The fight for the final direct Q2 spot went right down to the wire:

  • Ilya Mikhalchik impressed as the top rookie of the day, finishing 11th aboard the sole ROKiT BMW Motorrad entry — a strong result as he continues to learn the BSB ropes.
  • Glenn Irwin clung on to 12th place on the second Nitrous bike, snatching the last automatic Q2 berth by the narrowest of margins.
  • Joe Talbot missed out by just one position — the Bimota rider was shuffled down to 13th after Haslam’s late improvement. He will now face the longer route through Q1 on Saturday as he looks to bounce back from a frustrating Friday.

Further back:

  • Jason O’Halloran was 14th for Honda UK, just ahead of Josh Brookes in 15th on the second DAO Racing bike — both strong performers who will need to dig deep in Q1 to progress.
  • Storm Stacey had a day to remember for the wrong reasons, ending 18th aboard the Bathams AJN Ducati as he struggled to find a comfortable rhythm.
