Championship Leader Sets New Superpole Record While Rivals Prepare for Crucial Penultimate Round

Maria Herrera took another significant step towards retaining her FIM Women’s Circuit Racing World Championship crown after producing a dominant qualifying performance at Donington Park to secure pole position for the Prosecco DOC UK Round.

The Terra & Vita GRT Yamaha rider delivered a stunning lap of 1:39.091 during Friday’s Superpole session, establishing a new qualifying record around the historic British circuit and underlining why she remains the rider everyone has to beat in 2026.

With only two rounds remaining in this year’s championship, every point has become increasingly valuable. Herrera’s latest pole position not only strengthens her chances for Saturday’s opening race but also places her in the ideal position to edge even closer to a second consecutive WorldWCR title.

Although her championship rivals remain determined to keep the fight alive, Herrera once again demonstrated the pace and consistency that have defined her campaign.

Herrera Delivers Another Qualifying Masterclass

Fourth Pole Position of the Season Extends Championship Momentum

From the moment practice began on Friday morning, Herrera looked completely at ease around Donington Park’s fast and flowing layout.

The Spanish rider quickly established herself at the top of the timing screens before saving her very best performance for Superpole.

With clear track ahead and perfect execution during her flying laps, Herrera stopped the clock at 1:39.091, becoming the first rider ever to lap Donington Park in under the previous WorldWCR Superpole benchmark.

It marked her fourth pole position of the 2026 season and further highlighted the remarkable consistency she has shown throughout her title defence.

The result also places Herrera in the strongest possible position for Race 1, where a fast start could allow her to control proceedings from the front.

Speaking after qualifying, Herrera explained that everything had gone according to plan.

She revealed the team had initially considered making setup changes after practice but ultimately decided the motorcycle already felt well balanced. That confidence allowed her to concentrate entirely on producing a clean qualifying lap while avoiding traffic.

Despite securing pole by more than half a second, Herrera expects considerably closer racing once the lights go out.

She believes the longer race distance will allow several riders to battle together and insists maintaining concentration will be the key to converting pole position into another victory.

Neila Keeps Championship Pressure Alive

Closest Rival Produces Late Flying Lap to Secure Front Row

Although Herrera dominated qualifying, Beatriz Neila ensured she remains firmly in the championship picture.

The Ampito Crescent Yamaha rider produced her quickest lap during the closing moments of the session, climbing into second place with a time of 1:39.639.

The impressive late improvement ensured the Spaniard will line up alongside Herrera on the front row as she attempts to reduce the championship deficit this weekend.

Neila currently trails Herrera by 24 points in the standings and knows she must begin taking points back immediately if she is to prevent the title being decided before the season finale.

The 2025 championship runner-up has built an extraordinary reputation for consistency since the WorldWCR championship began, recording an exceptional run of podium finishes while regularly challenging Herrera for victories.

Donington Park is also a venue where Neila has previously enjoyed success.

She claimed victory in Race 2 during last year’s British round after taking pole position, meaning she arrives with confidence that she can once again challenge at the front.

Following qualifying, Neila admitted the session had been far from straightforward due to heavy traffic on track.

Despite that challenge, she was pleased with both her lap time and the improvements the team had made to the motorcycle between practice and qualifying.

She expects Saturday’s race to develop into a closely fought battle involving several riders rather than a simple duel for victory.

Ramos Impresses Despite Illness

Spanish Rookie Continues Outstanding Debut Campaign

Paola Ramos continued to strengthen her reputation as one of the breakout stars of the 2026 season by qualifying third for Race 1.

The Klint Racing Team rookie was the only rider other than Herrera and Neila to break into the 1:39 bracket, finishing less than one second away from pole despite battling illness throughout the day.

Considering it is her first competitive appearance at Donington Park, the performance further underlined the rapid progress Ramos has made during her debut WorldWCR campaign.

The Spaniard currently occupies third place in the championship standings and remains mathematically in title contention heading into the penultimate round.

Ramos revealed she had been suffering from stomach pain throughout Friday’s sessions and admitted the unusually warm British weather had made conditions even more demanding.

Despite feeling below her best physically, she praised her team’s adjustments during qualifying, which helped improve the motorcycle’s balance enough to secure a coveted front-row starting position.

She believes there is still further room for improvement before Saturday’s race and hopes overnight analysis will allow the team to make another step forward.

Penalty Drops Ruiz to Back of the Grid

Strong Qualifying Performance Undone by Yellow Flag Infringement

Pakita Ruiz initially looked set to begin the weekend from fourth position after another competitive Superpole performance.

However, the PR46+1 Racing Team rider was later penalised after officials determined she had improved her lap time while yellow flags were being displayed during practice.

As a result, Ruiz will start Race 1 from the rear of the grid despite posting one of the fastest laps of qualifying.

The setback creates one of the biggest challenges of the weekend, with Ruiz now facing the difficult task of fighting through the field around a circuit where overtaking opportunities are limited.

Relph Continues Strong Weekend

Australian Rider Delivers Best Qualifying Performance

Australia’s Tayla Relph enjoyed one of her strongest performances of the season by securing fifth place on the grid for Full Throttle Racing.

Relph had already shown encouraging pace during practice before carrying that momentum into qualifying to comfortably secure a second-row starting position.

Her consistent improvement throughout the season has steadily moved her closer to the championship’s leading group, and another strong result at Donington could further boost her confidence heading towards the final round.

Cerpa Bounces Back After Practice Crash

Rookie Shows Impressive Character

Yvonne Cerpa demonstrated impressive resilience after recovering from an earlier crash to qualify sixth.

The MotosCerpa-Gradara Corse rookie refused to let the setback affect her confidence, producing an excellent lap during Superpole to secure a place alongside Relph on the second row.

It was another encouraging performance from one of the championship’s promising newcomers.

Home Hero Jones Suffers Late Crash

British Rider Awaits Medical Clearance

British hopes suffered a setback late in qualifying when Chloe Jones crashed during the closing stages of Superpole.

Despite the incident, the Monster Energy Crescent Yamaha rider had already posted a lap good enough for seventh position on the grid.

Jones was taken to the circuit medical centre following the accident, where doctors diagnosed a bruised and grazed right thigh.

She is scheduled to undergo a further medical assessment before Saturday morning’s warm-up session to determine whether she is fully fit to continue racing.

The British rider had arrived at Donington carrying confidence after securing her first podium finish of the season at Misano and will hope to recover in time to compete in front of her home supporters.

Tight Midfield Battle Promises Close Racing

Championship Fight Extends Beyond the Front Row

Behind the leading trio, the competition remains exceptionally close.

Astrid Madrigal qualified eighth for Pons Italika Racing, while Natalia Rivera secured ninth for Terra & Vita GRT Yamaha.

Completing the top ten was experienced Spanish rider Sara Sanchez, who continues searching for another strong race result.

Championship contenders Roberta Ponziani and Muklada Sarapuech will begin Race 1 from the fourth row after qualifying 11th and 12th respectively.

Although slightly further back than expected, both riders possess the race pace needed to challenge for valuable championship points once the racing begins.

Herrera Holds the Early Advantage

Pole Position Could Prove Crucial in Championship Battle

With only four races remaining in the 2026 season, qualifying performances have become increasingly significant.

Starting from pole at Donington Park offers Herrera an ideal opportunity to dictate the pace from the opening laps while forcing her championship rivals onto the defensive.

Neila remains her closest challenger and will be determined to prevent Herrera from extending her advantage before Sunday’s second race.

Meanwhile, Ramos has once again demonstrated she belongs among the championship’s front-runners and could play an important role in the battle for victory.

If Friday’s Superpole session is any indication, fans can expect another fiercely competitive weekend as the Women’s Circuit Racing World Championship reaches one of its most important moments of the season.
