Aruba.it Racing Ducati Rider Claims First WorldSBK Victory After Intense Battle with Championship Leader

Iker Lecuona finally celebrated his long-awaited maiden FIM Superbike World Championship victory after producing a flawless performance in Race 1 at Donington Park, ending Nicolo Bulega’s remarkable winning streak in one of the closest contests of the 2026 season.

In front of a packed British crowd and under warm summer skies, Lecuona converted a perfect start into a memorable lights-to-flag victory, holding off relentless pressure from championship leader and Aruba.it Racing Ducati teammate Nicolo Bulega throughout all 23 laps.

The Spaniard never allowed the reigning championship leader an easy opportunity to attack, despite Bulega remaining within striking distance for virtually the entire race. At the chequered flag, just 0.165 seconds separated the two Ducati riders after one of the finest battles Donington Park has witnessed in recent seasons.

While Bulega narrowly missed extending his extraordinary winning run, Ducati once again underlined its superiority by locking out the top three positions, with Yari Montella completing another all-Dologna-manufacturer podium.

The victory also marked a significant milestone in Lecuona’s WorldSBK career, rewarding years of persistence after showing flashes of race-winning pace since joining the championship.

Lecuona Makes the Perfect Start

Early Holeshot Proves Crucial in Race Decided by Fine Margins

The opening moments proved decisive.

As the lights went out, Lecuona reacted brilliantly from the front row and claimed the holeshot into Redgate Corner, immediately putting himself in the ideal position to control proceedings.

Behind him, Bulega settled into second place, while Yari Montella initially held third before coming under pressure from the Lowes brothers during a frantic opening lap.

Donington Park’s flowing nature often makes overtaking difficult between evenly matched motorcycles, meaning track position is especially valuable. Lecuona understood this perfectly and immediately focused on maintaining clean, consistent laps rather than attempting to break away.

That strategy worked to perfection.

Although Bulega remained glued to the rear wheel of the leading Ducati throughout the race, Lecuona rarely put a wheel out of place and refused to offer his teammate any obvious opportunity to attack.

Ducati Teammates Produce Race of the Weekend

Bulega Pushes Until the Final Lap

The battle between the Aruba.it Racing Ducati teammates quickly became the highlight of Saturday’s racing.

Never separated by more than half a second, the pair exchanged fastest sectors throughout the race, each rider excelling in different parts of the Donington Park circuit.

Bulega consistently looked stronger through the fast, flowing opening section of the lap, where his confidence carrying corner speed allowed him to close the gap.

Lecuona, however, repeatedly fought back through the slower final sector.

The Spaniard’s excellent drive out of Melbourne Hairpin and Goddards proved decisive, allowing him to regain the few bike lengths he regularly lost earlier in the lap.

Several times Bulega attempted to position himself for an overtake into the Old Hairpin and Melbourne Loop.

One of his strongest opportunities came during the early stages when he briefly drew alongside before running slightly wide, allowing Lecuona to immediately reclaim the lead.

As the race entered its closing laps, the tension only increased.

Bulega remained close enough to threaten until the final corner but never found the small opening he needed to launch a decisive move.

Lecuona crossed the finish line just 0.165 seconds ahead to secure one of the most satisfying victories of his career.

Maiden WorldSBK Victory Rewards Years of Progress

Lecuona Delivers Career-Best Performance

Lecuona admitted afterwards that leading a WorldSBK race for such a prolonged period was a completely new experience.

The Spaniard revealed that racing without another rider directly ahead initially felt unusual, as he had no visual reference points during the opening laps.

However, once he settled into a rhythm, confidence quickly grew.

He credited the Ducati Panigale V4 R for giving him the confidence to ride consistently at the limit, explaining that the motorcycle allowed him to save several moments that might previously have ended in crashes.

Lecuona also highlighted the consistency he has developed throughout the season, pointing out that both of his crashes in 2026 came while experimenting with setup changes rather than pushing beyond the bike’s limits.

His victory now places him among WorldSBK race winners and could provide a major confidence boost heading into the second half of the championship.

Bulega’s Incredible Winning Run Finally Ends

Championship Leader Takes Valuable Second Place

Although disappointed to lose his unbeaten streak, Nicolo Bulega remained gracious in defeat.

The Italian immediately congratulated Lecuona, acknowledging that his teammate simply performed better over race distance.

Rather than expressing frustration, Bulega focused on the positives.

Second place still represents another important championship result and continues his remarkable consistency throughout the season.

Bulega explained that while the opening half of Donington suited his riding style perfectly, he struggled to match Lecuona’s acceleration exiting the circuit’s slower corners.

The difference was particularly noticeable out of the two hairpins, where Lecuona repeatedly gained valuable tenths before Bulega recovered the lost ground under braking.

Unfortunately for the championship leader, those small deficits prevented him from getting close enough to complete an overtake.

Despite finishing second, Bulega still recorded the fastest lap of the race with a new Donington Park WorldSBK lap record of 1:25.491, further highlighting the exceptional pace displayed by both factory Ducati riders.

Montella Completes Another Ducati Sweep

Strong Recovery Secures Third Place

Yari Montella continued his impressive form by securing another podium finish for the Barni Spark Racing Team.

Starting from third on the grid, the Italian briefly lost momentum during the opening lap after becoming involved in a spirited battle with home favourites Sam and Alex Lowes.

Rather than forcing risky overtaking moves, Montella remained patient.

Gradually rebuilding his rhythm, he worked his way back through the field before reclaiming third place and steadily opening a comfortable gap over the chasing riders.

Once clear of traffic, the Italian consistently matched the pace of the leading group and comfortably secured another valuable podium.

Montella later admitted that clean air transformed the behaviour of his motorcycle, allowing him to demonstrate the strong race pace shown throughout practice.

The result further strengthens his growing reputation as one of the standout independent Ducati riders this season.

Lowes Brothers Fight Hard on Home Soil

Sam Just Misses the Podium

British fans had plenty to cheer despite missing out on a home podium.

Sam Lowes produced one of his strongest performances of the campaign to finish fourth for the ELF Marc VDS Racing Team.

Running inside the podium positions during the early stages, Lowes fought hard throughout the race but ultimately lacked the outright pace to stay with the leading Ducati trio.

Nevertheless, fourth place represented another encouraging result as he continues building momentum.

Twin brother Alex Lowes also enjoyed a competitive afternoon aboard the Bimota by Kawasaki Racing Team machine.

The experienced British rider briefly climbed as high as fourth during the opening laps before spending much of the race battling inside the top six.

Although Lorenzo Baldassarri eventually found a way past during the closing stages, Alex still finished seventh as the highest-placed non-Ducati rider.

Bridewell Equals Season’s Best Finish

Home Hero Delivers for British Fans

Tommy Bridewell rewarded the home crowd with another determined ride.

Competing as a wildcard entry, Bridewell equalled his best result of the season by bringing his machine home in fifth place.

Throughout the race he maintained consistent lap times despite increasing pressure from riders behind, demonstrating once again why his experience around Donington Park remains invaluable.

Bridewell’s performance also highlighted the competitiveness of the British contingent at one of the championship’s most iconic venues.

Tom Booth-Amos Delights Home Crowd with Stunning WorldSSP Victory

British Rider Charges from Ninth on the Grid to Secure Triumph’s Historic Home Win

The FIM Supersport World Championship delivered another memorable story as Tom Booth-Amos produced an inspired comeback ride to claim victory for PTR Triumph Factory Racing.

Starting from ninth on the grid after receiving a six-place grid penalty, Booth-Amos faced an uphill battle before the race had even begun.

The challenge became even greater when he slipped back to tenth during the opening lap.

Undeterred, the British rider calmly worked his way forward, steadily picking off rivals while preserving his tyres for the decisive closing laps.

His patience paid off.

On Lap 10 he completed decisive overtaking moves on Aldi Mahendra and pole-sitter Can Oncu to move into the lead.

Once in clean air, Booth-Amos immediately increased his pace and gradually pulled away from the chasing pack.

He eventually crossed the finish line almost two and a half seconds ahead of championship leader Albert Arenas, securing both his second WorldSSP victory and Triumph’s first Supersport win on British soil.

Arenas Strengthens Championship Position

Another Mature Ride Extends Title Advantage

While Booth-Amos celebrated victory, Albert Arenas once again demonstrated why he leads the WorldSSP standings.

The Spaniard remained inside the leading group throughout the race before settling for second place, choosing consistency over unnecessary risk.

With several championship rivals encountering problems, Arenas significantly increased his points advantage.

Another podium finish extends his championship lead to 68 points, placing him firmly in control as the season approaches its closing stages.

Alcoba Returns to the Podium

Strong Recovery Earns First Top Three Finish of 2026

Jeremy Alcoba completed the podium after one of the strongest comeback drives of the afternoon.

The Kawasaki WorldSSP Team rider started from the front row but dropped back to eighth during the chaotic opening lap.

Showing impressive composure, Alcoba gradually recovered position after position before moving into third place late in the race.

He then defended strongly during the closing laps to secure his first podium finish of the season.

Championship Rivals Suffer Costly Setbacks

Masia Crashes While Debise Struggles

Not every championship contender enjoyed a positive afternoon.

Jaume Masia saw his race end prematurely after crashing at Goddards with just over a third of the race remaining.

The retirement proved particularly costly in the championship battle.

Meanwhile, Valentin Debise could only manage eighth place after struggling to find competitive pace throughout the race.

Those results allowed Arenas to significantly strengthen his championship position heading into Sunday’s second race.

Booth-Amos Earns Pole for Race 2

An already memorable day became even better for Booth-Amos after he also secured pole position for Sunday’s second race by setting the fastest lap during Race 1.

The achievement provides the British rider with an excellent opportunity to complete a dream home weekend in front of the Donington Park crowd.

With confidence high and Triumph’s package proving increasingly competitive, Booth-Amos now heads into Race 2 as one of the favourites for victory.

In WorldSSP, Tom Booth-Amos carries enormous momentum into Race 2 after delivering one of the finest performances of his career on home soil. With pole position, race-winning pace and a passionate British crowd behind him, the Triumph rider now has the opportunity to complete an unforgettable weekend at Donington Park.
