Maria Herrera Penalised After Last-Lap Incident as Championship Battle Heads to Jerez

The 2026 FIM Women’s Circuit Racing World Championship title fight will go down to the final round after Beatriz Neila claimed a dramatic Race 2 victory at Donington Park following a post-race penalty for championship leader Maria Herrera.

Herrera initially crossed the finish line in first place after another commanding performance at the Prosecco DOC UK Round, seemingly securing the WorldWCR title with one race weekend to spare. However, Race Direction later handed the Terra & Vita GRT Yamaha rider a six-second time penalty for her involvement in a final-lap collision with Paola Ramos, promoting Neila to victory.

The revised result dramatically reshaped the championship picture. Instead of celebrating the title at Donington Park, Herrera now heads to the season finale at Jerez with a 44-point advantage over Neila and 50 points still available.

It was another race filled with overtaking, late drama and championship controversy, providing a fitting conclusion to an action-packed weekend in the United Kingdom.

Post-Race Penalty Changes the Outcome

Herrera Demoted After Contact with Ramos

For much of the race, Maria Herrera looked set to complete a perfect weekend.

After claiming pole position and winning Saturday’s opening race, the championship leader controlled Race 2 from the front despite increasingly difficult weather conditions, with stronger winds making Donington Park even more demanding for the riders.

Herrera managed the pace expertly while defending from several challengers and crossed the finish line believing she had secured another victory—and potentially the championship.

However, the decisive moment came during the closing stages.

As Paola Ramos launched an attack on the race leader during the final lap, contact between the two riders resulted in the Klint Racing rider crashing out at Turn 6.

Following an investigation after the race, the FIM WorldSBK Stewards concluded Herrera was responsible for the incident and imposed a six-second time penalty.

The sanction dropped Herrera from first to second in the final classification and handed victory to Beatriz Neila.

The decision also delayed Herrera’s championship celebrations, ensuring the title battle remains alive until the final round in Spain.

Neila Produces Stunning Recovery Drive

From Tenth on the Grid to Victory

Beatriz Neila’s victory was built on determination after enduring a disappointing Saturday.

The Ampito Crescent Yamaha rider entered Race 2 determined to recover from her opening-race retirement following her controversial collision with Herrera in Race 1.

Starting only tenth on the grid, Neila immediately faced a difficult challenge on a circuit where overtaking opportunities are limited.

The Spaniard wasted little time moving through the field.

By Lap 7 she had already climbed into third place after making a series of decisive overtaking moves, carefully avoiding unnecessary risks while maintaining impressive race pace.

As the race developed, Neila continued applying pressure to the riders ahead before crossing the finish line in second position.

Only after Herrera’s penalty was confirmed did Neila inherit victory, rewarding one of the strongest comeback performances of the season.

The result keeps her championship hopes alive, even though she still faces a significant points deficit heading into Jerez.

Championship Battle Goes Down to the Final Round

Herrera Still Holds Strong Advantage

Despite losing victory, Maria Herrera remains firmly in control of the championship.

The Spaniard now has 226 points compared to Neila’s 182, leaving a 44-point advantage with only one race weekend remaining.

With a maximum of 50 points still available across the final two races at Jerez, Herrera remains the overwhelming favourite to lift the 2026 WorldWCR title.

However, the events at Donington have ensured there will be no early celebrations.

Neila now has one final opportunity to mount an unlikely comeback on home soil, while Herrera only needs a measured performance in Spain to secure the championship.

The season finale promises to provide an exciting conclusion to one of the most competitive WorldWCR campaigns to date.

Herrera Questions Penalty Decision

Championship Leader Believes She Rode a Perfect Race

Speaking after the race, Herrera admitted she was disappointed to miss the opportunity to secure the title at Donington.

The championship leader felt she had executed one of her strongest races of the season, particularly given the increasingly windy conditions that made tyre management and race pace more challenging.

Discussing the decisive incident with Paola Ramos, Herrera explained she knew there had been contact but did not realise Ramos had crashed until after the race had finished.

She described the overtaking attempt as taking place in one of the circuit’s more difficult sections, suggesting both riders were pushing at the absolute limit.

Although frustrated by the penalty, Herrera accepted the championship fight will now continue into the final round and expressed confidence ahead of returning to Jerez, a circuit where she has traditionally performed strongly.

Ramos Denied Podium After Late Crash

Fastest Rider Misses Out in Dramatic Finish

One of the biggest disappointments of Race 2 belonged to Paola Ramos.

The Klint Racing rookie once again demonstrated her growing confidence by running among the leaders throughout the race.

After briefly leading during the opening laps, Ramos remained firmly involved in the battle for victory and looked on course for another podium finish.

Her race ended heartbreakingly on the final lap after the collision with Herrera at Turn 6.

The retirement denied Ramos valuable championship points after another outstanding performance.

Despite failing to finish, the Spaniard still produced the fastest lap of the race with a new WorldWCR lap record of 1:38.908, underlining her impressive pace throughout the weekend.

Her performance once again confirmed why she has become one of the standout rookies of the 2026 season.

Ponziani Capitalises to Secure Podium

Italian Climbs to Third in Championship

Roberta Ponziani enjoyed one of her strongest weekends of the year by securing third place after benefiting from the final-lap drama.

The Klint Racing rider spent most of the race inside the leading group before inheriting a podium finish following Ramos’ retirement.

It marked Ponziani’s second podium of the season and moved her into third place in the overall championship standings.

After struggling with bike setup throughout Friday’s practice sessions, the Italian and her team made several significant adjustments that steadily improved the motorcycle across the weekend.

Although she admitted the bike became increasingly difficult to handle during the closing laps, Ponziani focused on staying upright and collecting valuable points.

Her consistency has now elevated her above teammate Ramos in the championship heading into Jerez.

Chloe Jones Delivers Strong Home Performance

British Rider Continues Impressive Progress

British fans were given plenty to cheer as Chloe Jones produced another composed performance on home soil.

Starting from the second row, the Monster Energy Crescent Yamaha rider remained competitive throughout the race despite facing intense pressure from the chasing group.

Jones eventually crossed the finish line in fourth place, matching one of her strongest results of the season.

Having already demonstrated impressive speed throughout the Donington weekend, the result further strengthens her position in the championship as she continues closing the gap to fifth place overall.

Competing in front of home supporters appeared to provide extra motivation, and her consistent pace throughout both races highlighted her continued development in the championship.

Sanchez and Ruiz Continue Consistent Campaigns

Valuable Championship Points for Experienced Spaniards

Sara Sanchez once again demonstrated her racecraft by securing another top-five finish.

The Hadden Racing rider spent much of Race 2 defending against a large group of riders while maintaining consistent pace throughout the contest.

Fifth place matched her Race 1 result and added another important points haul to her championship campaign.

Pakita Ruiz also enjoyed another productive afternoon.

The PR46+1 Racing Team rider avoided the incidents affecting several rivals and quietly worked her way into sixth place, collecting valuable championship points ahead of Astrid Madrigal.

Madrigal’s performance was particularly impressive considering she had suffered a heavy crash during Sunday morning’s warm-up session before returning to race later in the day.

Relph and Pedemonte Complete Top Ten

Australian Recovers After Difficult Weekend

Australian rider Tayla Relph bounced back well after her Race 1 retirement.

The Full Throttle Racing competitor started further down the order but steadily worked her way into the points, eventually finishing ninth.

Although the result fell short of the promise shown during qualifying, it represented a solid recovery after Saturday’s disappointment.

Justine Pedemonte rounded out the top ten for GMT94 Yamaha after another consistent ride that added further championship points.

Sarapuech Suffers Costly Crash

Thai Rookie Taken to Medical Centre

Muklada Sarapuech endured a frustrating end to an otherwise competitive weekend.

The Thai rookie had spent much of the race running inside the top five before crashing at Turn 9.

Medical staff later confirmed she sustained a contusion to her left shoulder.

Although the injury is not believed to be serious, the retirement prevented Sarapuech from adding to her championship tally.

Even so, she remains fifth overall in the standings heading into the final round.

Championship Standings Tighten Ahead of Jerez

The latest championship standings leave the title fight finely poised entering the final event of the season.

Maria Herrera continues to lead with 226 points, while Beatriz Neila closes the gap slightly with 182 points.

Roberta Ponziani’s podium elevates her into third place on 118 points, narrowly ahead of teammate Paola Ramos on 117.

Muklada Sarapuech remains fifth overall despite her retirement at Donington.

With two races remaining and 50 points still available, Herrera remains in the strongest position, but Neila has ensured the championship will not be decided until the final weekend.

Jerez Set for Championship Decider

The 2026 FIM Women’s Circuit Racing World Championship now heads to Jerez for a winner-takes-all finale.

Maria Herrera arrives needing only to protect her sizeable championship advantage, while Beatriz Neila must deliver a perfect weekend and hope results elsewhere fall in her favour.

Behind the title contenders, the battle for third place also remains extremely close, with Roberta Ponziani and Paola Ramos separated by just a single point.

After two dramatic races at Donington Park filled with penalties, crashes and changing fortunes, expectations are high that the season finale in Spain will provide another memorable conclusion to an increasingly competitive WorldWCR championship.
