A thrilling final-lap showdown at the Algarve International Circuit saw Paola Ramos claim her first victory of the 2026 WorldWCR season, narrowly defeating reigning champion Maria Herrera in a tense sprint to the chequered flag.
Racing in windy and challenging conditions, the 18-year-old rookie delivered a composed and intelligent ride, staying glued to Herrera throughout before making her decisive move when it mattered most.
Race 2: Ramos times it perfectly
After finishing second in Race 1, Ramos returned with clear intent. From the start, she latched onto Herrera’s rear wheel and refused to let the leader escape, carefully studying where she might have an advantage.
Herrera, riding for Terra & Vita GRT Yamaha WorldWCR, controlled the race for the majority of the 11 laps. However, the nature of the Portimão circuit—with its long straights and flowing layout—made it difficult to break the slipstream and build a decisive gap.
Ramos took full advantage of that. Having shadowed Herrera lap after lap, she made her move on the final lap with a clean and well-judged overtake, holding her nerve to cross the line just 0.053 seconds ahead.
Herrera forced to settle for second
Despite leading for most of the race, Herrera had to settle for second after being unable to shake off the persistent challenge from her fellow Spaniard.
The reigning champion still demonstrated impressive pace, repeatedly lapping in the low 1’52s and showing strong consistency throughout. However, in such closely matched conditions, even a small opportunity was enough for Ramos to capitalise.
The result leaves both riders tied at the top of the championship standings—an early sign that this season could develop into a closely fought rivalry.
Neila keeps the pressure on
Beatriz Neila once again proved she belongs at the front, securing another podium finish for Ampito Crescent Yamaha.
The 2025 championship runner-up matched the leaders’ pace for much of the race and stayed within striking distance, ultimately finishing just over two tenths behind the winner. Her performance was further underlined by setting the fastest lap of the race—a new race lap record—highlighting her speed even if she couldn’t quite mount a final attack.
Intense battles behind the podium
As in Race 1, the fight behind the leading trio provided plenty of action. A tightly packed group battled throughout for positions inside the top five, showcasing how competitive the field has become.
Roberta Ponziani and Pakita Ruiz emerged at the head of this group, finishing fourth and fifth respectively after maintaining strong and consistent pace.
Rookie Yvonne Cerpa continued to impress, improving on her Race 1 performance to finish sixth and collect valuable championship points.
Just fractions behind, Natalia Rivera crossed the line only 0.086 seconds adrift of Cerpa, underlining how closely matched the midfield battle was. Tayla Relph followed in eighth after another steady ride.
Close finishes and determined recoveries
Further down the order, Thai wildcard Muklada Sarapuech delivered a strong performance to finish ninth, narrowly edging out experienced campaigner Sara Sanchez in a near photo finish.
Meanwhile, Chloe Jones showed resilience after a difficult start. Despite jumping the start and receiving a double long lap penalty, the British rider fought back to finish 14th and still come away with points—a solid recovery under the circumstances.
Championship picture tightens
With one win and one second-place finish each, Ramos and Herrera now sit level at the top of the standings with 45 points apiece.
Neila strengthens her position in third with 32 points, while Ponziani and Ruiz round out the top five, demonstrating consistency across the opening rounds.
