Maria Herrera wasted no time asserting her authority in the 2026 campaign, delivering a flawless performance to win the opening race of the FIM Women’s Circuit Racing World Championship season at Algarve International Circuit. The reigning champion controlled proceedings from the front, eventually crossing the line with a commanding advantage of over four and a half seconds.

From the moment the lights went out, Herrera looked completely at ease. Not only did she manage the race from the front, but she also set the fastest lap along the way, underlining both her speed and consistency. It was the kind of performance that immediately sends a message to the rest of the grid: the champion is ready to defend her title.

Ramos shines on debut as Neila completes the podium

Behind Herrera, all eyes were on Paola Ramos, who delivered an outstanding ride in her first full-time WorldWCR appearance. After a slightly tricky start, the rookie quickly settled into her rhythm, moving ahead of Beatriz Neila in the early laps and steadily building a gap.

Once clear, Ramos rode a composed and intelligent race, avoiding mistakes and maintaining strong pace throughout. She ultimately secured second place by a margin of around three seconds, marking an impressive debut and immediately establishing herself as a rider to watch this season.

Neila, meanwhile, completed the podium in third. Despite dealing with setup challenges throughout testing and the early part of the weekend, she managed to deliver when it counted. While she couldn’t quite match the pace of the top two over race distance, her performance showed resilience and determination—important traits for a long championship battle.

Fierce battle for fourth delivers late-race drama

While the podium positions became relatively spread out, the fight for fourth provided plenty of action. Roberta Ponziani spent much of the race holding that position, but in the closing laps she was reeled in by a tightly packed group of riders.

What followed was one of the most exciting battles of the race, with six riders locked together and separated by barely a second. In the end, it was Lucie Boudesseul who came out on top, snatching fourth place by an incredibly narrow margin—just 0.058 seconds ahead of Sara Sanchez.

The fight didn’t stop there. Just fractions behind Sanchez were Yvonne Cerpa, Pakita Ruiz, and Natalia Rivera, all crossing the line within seven tenths of Boudesseul. It was a clear demonstration of just how competitive the midfield pack has become in WorldWCR.

Solid rides and recovery performances through the field

Further down the order, Tayla Relph rode a more isolated race to finish tenth, while wildcard entry Muklada Sarapuechimpressed by securing eleventh place and collecting valuable championship points.

One of the standout recovery rides came from Chloe Jones. Starting from twentieth on the grid following a penalty, she carved her way through the field to finish thirteenth, earning her first points of the season in the process. It was a determined performance that could prove important as the championship unfolds.

The race also saw a handful of incidents, with Mallory Dobbs, Katie Hand, and Emily Bondi all crashing out. Fortunately, all three riders escaped without injury.

Herrera sets the benchmark heading into Race 2

In addition to taking victory, Herrera also posted the fastest lap of the race—a 1’52.685—which not only highlighted her pace but also secured her pole position for the second race of the weekend under the championship’s regulations.

Her performance was particularly impressive given how early in the season it is. With minimal changes to machinery but a new team environment behind her, Herrera already looks fully comfortable and in control.

Championship standings after Race 1

After the opening race, Herrera leads the standings with a perfect 25 points. Ramos sits second with 20 points after her impressive debut, while Neila rounds out the top three with 16.

Boudesseul’s strong finish places her fourth in the standings with 13 points, just ahead of Sanchez on 11, reflecting the tight competition just behind the leading trio.

Reaction from the podium

Herrera admitted after the race that she initially expected a closer battle at the front, particularly with Ramos showing strong pace throughout the weekend. However, once she realised she had built a significant lead, she was able to manage the race more comfortably.

Ramos, meanwhile, was delighted with her result despite acknowledging that her start could have been better. She remains realistic about the challenge ahead, especially with Herrera’s pace, but is clearly confident about her ability to compete at the front.

For Neila, third place felt like a small victory given the difficulties she had faced with setup. She highlighted the progress made during the race but also pointed out that there is still room for improvement, particularly in closing the gap to the leaders.

A statement win to start 2026

This opening race offered an early glimpse into what could be a fiercely competitive season. While Herrera’s dominance at the front was clear, the battles behind showed just how much depth there is across the grid.

With another race still to come in Portimão, the question now is whether anyone can close the gap to the reigning champion—or if Herrera will continue to set the pace once again.
