
WorldSBK Mourns the Loss of Esteemed Race Director Gian Franco Carloia
It is with profound sadness that WorldSBK announces the passing of Gian Franco Carloia, the championship’s longtime and highly respected Race Director. Carloia passed away following a battle with illness in recent months, leaving behind a remarkable legacy within the world of motorcycle racing.
A Lifelong Dedication to WorldSBK
Gian Franco Carloia’s journey with WorldSBK began over three decades ago. He first joined the championship in 1993 through its former promoter, FGSport, marking the start of a career that would span more than 30 years. His deep understanding of the sport, paired with a meticulous approach to race operations, quickly made him a trusted and valued member of the paddock.
In 2001, Carloia was appointed assistant to then-Race Director Alberto Fantini. It was during this time that he further honed his skills in race management, working side by side with Fantini and gaining invaluable insight into the role. His tireless commitment and sharp eye for detail were recognized in 2008, when he succeeded Fantini as WorldSBK Race Director.
Leading With Integrity, Precision, and Passion
As Race Director, Carloia’s influence stretched across every aspect of the championship’s on-track operations. He was the person entrusted with ensuring each WorldSBK event ran safely, fairly, and in line with the highest standards of professionalism. Whether it was managing high-pressure race weekends, navigating challenging weather conditions, or making split-second decisions, Carloia was widely respected for his calm demeanor, fairness, and unwavering focus on rider safety.
Riders, teams, and colleagues alike often spoke of his precision and dedication, with many crediting him as a key figure in maintaining the integrity and smooth functioning of the series during his tenure. His leadership helped shape the evolution of WorldSBK, and his deep care for the sport was evident in every decision he made.
