Deal Set to Finalize by Early July, Ushering in a New Era for Premier Motorcycle Racing
Monday, 23 June 2025 — Liberty Media Corporation has cleared the final major regulatory hurdle in its acquisition of MotoGP™ rights-holder Dorna Sports, receiving unconditional approval from the European Commission. With this green light, the deal is now poised to close by July 3, 2025, setting the stage for a bold new chapter in the world of premier motorcycle racing.
The acquisition, which had already passed other necessary checks, marks a significant milestone for both MotoGP and Liberty Media. Often described as the most electrifying motorsport on the planet, MotoGP is currently thriving—drawing record-breaking crowds, expanding to new circuits, and experiencing a surge in global viewership. Liberty Media plans to harness that momentum and its own experience in global sports management to take the series to new heights.
Carmelo Ezpeleta, who has led Dorna Sports as CEO since 1998, will remain in charge of MotoGP’s day-to-day operations, continuing to work alongside his trusted management team.
“Today’s approval from the European Commission completes the final step required to finalize our acquisition of MotoGP,” said Derek Chang, President and CEO of Liberty Media. “We’re excited to formally begin our partnership with Carmelo and his outstanding leadership team. MotoGP is a premium sports property that offers edge-of-your-seat racing, an incredibly loyal global fanbase, and a healthy financial outlook. We’re confident that we can unlock even more value by strengthening ties with core fans and extending the sport’s reach worldwide.”
Ezpeleta echoed the enthusiasm, viewing the Commission’s approval as a pivotal moment for MotoGP.
“We’re very pleased to see the transaction approved. It represents a major step forward and confirms the bright future that lies ahead,” Ezpeleta said. “MotoGP is already one of the most exhilarating sports anywhere, and we’re now in a position to accelerate its growth. Liberty Media is the ideal partner for our championship and community, and we’re excited about what we can achieve together—for fans, teams, and our commercial stakeholders.”
Under the terms of the agreement, Liberty Media will acquire 84% of Dorna Sports, with the remaining 16% retained by MotoGP management. This structure ensures that the current leadership will continue to play an active role in the sport’s direction while gaining access to Liberty’s expansive resources and global expertise.
Liberty Media is a major player in the media and entertainment landscape, with a portfolio that includes ownership of Formula 1 and Quint, as well as significant stakes in Live Nation and other prominent media ventures. The company’s acquisition of MotoGP reflects its broader strategy of investing in high-profile live sports properties with strong growth potential.
The deal signals not just a change in ownership but the beginning of what both parties believe will be a transformative phase for MotoGP—boosting its international profile, enhancing commercial opportunities, and ultimately enriching the experience for fans and competitors alike.
