#BabyGOAT: Alonso clinches 2024 crown with 10th win

David Alonso Crowned 2024 Moto3™ World Champion with Stunning Victory at Japanese GP
It’s official: David Alonso (CFMOTO Gaviota Aspar Team) is the 2024 Moto3™ World Champion! The Colombian sensation claimed his 10th victory of the season at the Japanese GP, sealing the title with four races to spare. Alonso’s triumph at the Mobility Resort Motegi cements his place in history as the first Colombian to win a World Championship. Collin Veijer (Liqui Moly Husqvarna Intact GP) finished second, with Adrian Fernandez (Leopard Racing) rounding out the podium in third.
Ortola Leads Early, Alonso Bides His Time
Starting from pole, Ivan Ortola (MT Helmets – MSI) launched brilliantly, grabbing the holeshot ahead of Alonso, while Veijer slipped from P2 to P7. Daniel Holgado (Red Bull GASGAS Tech3) made quick progress from P9, overtaking Alonso for P2 on the opening lap.
As the race unfolded, Alonso was shuffled back to P5, with Angel Piqueras and Fernandez both overtaking him. By Lap 3, Ortola led from Holgado and Fernandez, while Alonso fought back to P4.
Fernandez Takes Charge, Alonso Drops Back
On Lap 4, Fernandez pulled off a sensational double overtake to take the lead, while Alonso found himself battling in P7 after being passed by Ryusei Yamanaka (MT Helmets – MSI) and David Muñoz (BOE Motorsports). However, Alonso wasn’t done yet. A series of passes saw him climb back to P3 after a mistake from Holgado on Lap 9.
Alonso Seizes Control
With seven laps remaining, Alonso moved into a Championship-winning position. As Ortola and Holgado battled behind, Alonso made his move on Ortola, taking P2. The pair continued to exchange positions until Alonso decisively claimed P2 on Lap 13. Veijer, meanwhile, passed Holgado for P4, as Piqueras crashed out of the lead group, narrowing the field to five contenders.
Drama in the Final Laps
With four laps to go, Alonso took the lead for the first time, only for Fernandez to quickly fight back. The Colombian regained the lead at Turn 11, while Holgado reclaimed P4 from Veijer. As the race reached its climax, Ortola crashed out of podium contention on the penultimate lap, leaving Alonso with a 0.4s lead heading into the final lap.
Alonso’s Champion Moment
On the last lap, Alonso kept his cool as Veijer and Fernandez battled for second, allowing him to maintain his lead. The Colombian crossed the line to claim victory and the 2024 Moto3™ World Championship – his 10th win of the season and a record-breaking 14th in Moto3™.
Veijer, Fernandez Complete the Podium
Collin Veijer secured P2 after a fierce battle with Fernandez, who settled for his second consecutive podium in P3. Holgado finished fourth, ending his title hopes, while Jose Antonio Rueda (Red Bull KTM Ajo) completed the top five. Yamanaka was the lead Japanese rider in P6, just 1.3 seconds from victory.
