A League of His Own: Alonso Secures 14th Victory as Holgado Claims Silver Medal Honors
David Alonso (CFMOTO Valresa Aspar Team) capped off an unforgettable 2024 Moto3™ season with his 14th victory, triumphing in a nail-biting finale at the last Grand Prix of the year. In a race where just 0.147 seconds separated him from runner-up Daniel Holgado (Red Bull GASGAS Tech3), the Colombian sensation once again proved his dominance. Holgado’s second-place finish earned him the silver medal in the World Championship, while Angel Piqueras (Leopard Racing) joined the podium after a post-race penalty reshuffled the final standings.
Alonso Takes Charge
As the lights went out, Alonso stormed off the line from pole position, quickly seizing the holeshot and establishing an early lead ahead of Ivan Ortola (MT Helmets – MSI) and Holgado. David Muñoz (BOE Motorsports) put on a show for the fans, rocketing from P12 on the grid to fourth place within the opening laps. By Lap 3, Muñoz had climbed to second, overtaking Ortola and briefly leading Alonso in a spirited battle.
Slipstream Frenzy
The front pack delivered an exhilarating display of slipstreaming, with positions swapping constantly. Angel Piqueras and Adrian Fernandez were embroiled in the fight, with Fernandez challenging for the lead. Alonso, meanwhile, bided his time in eighth, staying composed as chaos unfolded around him.
Alonso on the Hunt
Patience paid off as Alonso methodically carved through the field. Capitalizing on the fierce duel between Ortola and Muñoz, the Colombian ace surged into second place and set his sights on reclaiming the lead. By Lap 14, Alonso was back in front, hunting down an unprecedented 14th win of the season.
Final Lap Showdown
The race reached a fever pitch in the closing laps. Elbows were out, and no quarter was given as the season finale edged towards a breathtaking finish. Alonso held his ground, maintaining a slim three-tenth advantage over the pack as they jostled for position. Holgado, determined to catch the World Champion, gave it his all in a last-ditch effort.
In the end, Alonso crossed the line just 0.147 seconds ahead of Holgado, cementing his victory and leaving no doubt about his place as the rider to beat in 2024. Holgado’s valiant effort secured him another podium and the runner-up spot in the World Championship standings.
Piqueras Snatches Third
Behind the leading duo, Angel Piqueras claimed the final podium position after a dramatic penalty reshuffled the results. Adrian Fernandez, who had initially crossed the line ahead of Piqueras, received a three-second post-race penalty for a shortcut on the last lap, dropping him to 11th.
Standout Performances
- Jose Antonio Rueda (Red Bull KTM Ajo) delivered an impressive comeback, charging from P17 on the grid to finish in fourth place.
- Ryusei Yamanaka (MT Helmets – MSI) rounded out the top five, benefiting from a demotion handed to Muñoz for irresponsible riding on the final lap.
Other notable finishers included:
- Taiyo Furusato (Honda Team Asia), who claimed seventh, followed closely by Jacob Roulstone (Red Bull GASGAS Tech3), the Australian rookie impressing with a strong P8.
- Ivan Ortola and Collin Veijer (Liqui Moly Husqvarna Intact GP) completed the top 10, with both riders securing fourth and third in the overall Championship standings, respectively.
Closing the Curtain
The 2024 Moto3™ World Championship drew to a close with a race that encapsulated the spirit of the season: intense competition, breathtaking battles, and unforgettable moments. With winter now upon us, fans and riders alike will eagerly await the 2025 season, where the drama and excitement will surely resume.
