Dixon Makes a Bold Championship Statement with Spectacular Victory at Aragón

Jake with trophy podium

The Gran Premio GoPro de Aragón delivered another thrilling Moto2™ race, with Jake Dixon (CFMOTO Inde Aspar Team) charging to his second victory of the season. Dixon held off Tony Arbolino (Elf Marc VDS Racing Team), who made his return to the podium for the first time in 2024. Meanwhile, Deniz Öncü (Red Bull KTM Ajo) capped off a remarkable weekend in his rookie Moto2™ season, becoming the first Turkish rider to finish on the intermediate class podium since Kenan Sofuoglu in 2011.

Starting from pole, Dixon seized the holeshot, but Arbolino took the lead on Lap 4 amidst a fierce group battle. Just a few laps later, Dixon made a decisive move to reclaim the lead, steadily pulling away from the pack.

The race wasn’t without drama, as Fermin Aldeguer (Sync SpeedUp) crashed out on Lap 7 following contact with Öncü, leaving him with zero points. Championship leader Sergio Garcia (MT Helmets – MSI) also struggled, battling outside the points, receiving a Long Lap Penalty, and eventually retiring from the race.

Ai Ogura (MT Helmets – MSI), returning from injury, edged into the points by Lap 7, while Celestino Vietti (Red Bull KTM Ajo) fell back after a collision with Joe Roberts (OnlyFans American Racing Team) at Turn 16. Roberts received a Long Lap Penalty, dropping him to eighth, but later crashed on the final lap, failing to score any points.

Öncü, recovering from his earlier contact, overtook Alonso Lopez (Sync SpeedUp) to secure his maiden Moto2™ podium. Dixon, meanwhile, managed to extend his lead over Arbolino in the closing stages, finishing 1.7 seconds ahead and moving to fifth in the championship, 43 points off the top. Arbolino’s second place marked his first podium of the season, while Öncü’s third place was a historic achievement.

Lopez finished just off the podium in fourth, a crucial result as he climbed to third overall in the standings. Ogura charged up to eighth, narrowing the gap to his teammate Garcia to just 12 points and staying ahead of Lopez in the standings.

Manuel Gonzalez (QJMOTOR Gresini Moto2™), Somkiat Chantra (IDEMITSU Honda Team Asia), and Marcos Ramirez (OnlyFans American Racing Team) completed the top seven, with Ogura, Darryn Binder (Liqui Moly Husqvarna Intact GP), and Vietti rounding out the top 10.

With just 12 points separating the top riders, the championship battle is heating up. Stay tuned as the action continues next week at the Gran Premio Red Bull di San Marino e della Riviera di Rimini in Misano!
