Vietti steals win from Canet and Arbolino in a Moto2™ classic

The Moto2™ race at the Emilia-Romagna GP delivered a breathtaking finale as home favorite Celestino Vietti (Red Bull KTM Ajo) clinched his second win of the season, narrowly defeating Aron Canet (Fantic Racing) by just 0.029 seconds. Tony Arbolino (Elf Marc VDS Racing Team) led for most of the last lap, but a costly mistake at Turn 14 relegated him to P3. Meanwhile, Ai Ogura (MT Helmets – MSI) secured P4, extending his lead in the World Championship standings.
Early Drama and Battles at the Front
Tony Arbolino got off to a flying start, taking the early lead, while Vietti and Canet slotted into P2 and P3, respectively. Championship leader Ogura made a strong start from P7, quickly moving up to P4 in the opening laps.
The race saw early setbacks for two title contenders. Jake Dixon (CFMOTO Inde Aspar Team), running in P7, crashed at Turn 2, followed shortly by Sergio Garcia (MT Helmets – MSI) crashing at Turn 1. Both riders were unable to continue, ending their races in disappointment.
At the front, Arbolino’s early lead was being steadily chipped away by Vietti and Canet. The trio pulled two seconds clear of Ogura, who had Fermin Aldeguer (MB Conveyors SpeedUp) close behind, with Joe Roberts (OnlyFans American Racing) in a lonely P6.
Mid-Race Action: Mistakes and Tight Gaps
With six laps to go, Vietti made a mistake at Turn 2, allowing Canet to take P2 and giving Arbolino some breathing room. Vietti’s error cost him 0.8 seconds, leaving Canet in charge of chasing down the race leader. The gap between the top three narrowed to 0.4 seconds with four laps remaining, as Vietti relentlessly pressured Canet for P2.
As the race heated up, Canet and Vietti both passed Arbolino at Turn 14 after a mistake from the leader. However, another error from Vietti at the final corner dropped him back, putting him 0.7 seconds behind as the penultimate lap began. The trio exchanged positions, with Arbolino and Canet trading the lead multiple times.
The Last-Lap Showdown
Heading into the final lap, Arbolino led, with Canet and Vietti right on his tail. Arbolino held strong through the first half of the lap, but at Turn 14, he ran wide—very wide—allowing Canet to snatch the lead. Vietti, however, wasn’t done. He got a better drive out of the final corner, overtaking Canet in the sprint to the finish line to claim victory on home soil. A heartbroken Arbolino finished third after a near-flawless race, completing a thrilling battle at Misano.
Championship Standings and Next Round
Ai Ogura finished a close P4, just one second away from the podium, extending his championship lead to 22 points as the Moto2™ paddock heads to Indonesia. Fermin Aldeguer crossed the line in P5, 1.5 seconds behind Ogura, while Joe Roberts secured P6—his best finish since the Italian GP.
Senna Agius (Liqui Moly Husqvarna Intact GP) delivered an impressive P7, his second-best result of the season, finishing ahead of Marcos Ramirez (OnlyFans American Racing), Alonso Lopez (MB Conveyors SpeedUp), and Filip Salač (Elf Marc VDS Racing Team), who rounded out the top 10.
A Race to Remember
The Emilia-Romagna GP treated fans to an unforgettable Moto2™ race, with the top three riders delivering an epic contest. As Ogura continues to pull away in the championship standings, all eyes now turn to Lombok for the Indonesian GP. Can the momentum of the #79 be halted? We won’t have to wait long to find out!
