Victorious Vietti charges to maiden 2024 win at the Red Bull Ring

Celestino Vietti Claims Victory at the Red Bull Ring as Eighth Different Moto2 Winner of 2024
Celestino Vietti (Red Bull KTM Ajo) secured his second consecutive victory at the Red Bull Ring, becoming the eighth different Moto2 winner of 2024. The Italian rider dominated Sunday’s race, converting his pole position into a flawless win. Alonso Lopez (Sync SpeedUp) and Jake Dixon (CFMOTO Inde Aspar Team) joined him on the podium, with Dixon overtaking Aron Canet (Fantic Racing) on the final lap to claim third place.
The race began with a strong start from the front row, as Canet led the opening lap before Vietti reclaimed the lead on Lap 2, with Lopez close behind in P3. Sergio Garcia (MT Helmets – MSI) ran in fourth, about a second ahead of Dixon.
On Lap 4, Lopez moved past Canet for second, while Garcia trailed the top three by just over a second, followed by Dixon, Tony Arbolino (Elf Marc VDS Racing Team), and Marcos Ramirez (OnlyFans American Racing). By Lap 5, both Dixon and Arbolino had overtaken Garcia.
By Lap 7, Vietti had stretched his lead to 1.1 seconds over Lopez and Canet, with Dixon 1.6 seconds further back, closely followed by Arbolino. However, Vietti’s advantage was cut from 1.4 seconds to 0.4 seconds after a mistake at Turn 3 on Lap 9, bringing the top three within 0.8 seconds of each other.
As the race entered its final stages, a battle for second place unfolded between Canet and Lopez, allowing Vietti to extend his lead back to a full second. With five laps to go, Vietti was 1.7 seconds clear, while Dixon closed in on Canet, making it a three-way fight for second. Meanwhile, Garcia was handed a Long Lap penalty for exceeding track limits, dropping him from P6 to P13.
On the final lap, Vietti held a commanding 2.7-second lead. Dixon attempted to pass Canet at Turn 1 but exceeded track limits in the process. Though Dixon couldn’t quite overtake Lopez, he secured third place as Canet’s track limit violation at the final corner relegated him to fourth.
Tony Arbolino finished in a lonely fifth place, with Marcos Ramirez taking sixth. Darryn Binder (Liqui Moly Husqvarna Intact GP) and Somkiat Chantra (IDEMITSU Honda Team Asia) followed, while Joe Roberts (OnlyFans American Racing) claimed ninth, gaining crucial points over Garcia. Filip Salač (Elf Marc VDS Racing Team) rounded out the top 10.
Deniz Öncü (Red Bull KTM Ajo) marked his return with an impressive 11th place finish in his first race since the Italian GP. Izan Guevara (CFMOTO Inde Aspar Team) and Manuel Gonzalez (QJMOTOR Gresini Moto2™) took P12 and P13, respectively, while Garcia’s penalty left him in P14. Senna Agius (Liqui Moly Husqvarna Intact GP) claimed the final point in P15. Fermin Aldeguer (Sync SpeedUp) had a disappointing weekend, finishing in 20th.
Vietti’s victory at the Red Bull Ring for the second consecutive year propels him further up the standings, while Garcia extends his championship lead to 20 points heading into Aragon – though it could have been more.
