After a challenging start to the season, Senna Agius delivered a composed and determined performance to claim his third Moto2 career victory at the Circuit of the Americas. Riding for LIQUI MOLY Dynavolt Intact GP, the Australian held his nerve under intense late pressure from Celestino Vietti, who secured his first podium finish of the season. Izan Guevara completed the top three with another strong and consistent ride.
Chaotic opening leads to red flag
The race began with Alonso Lopez grabbing the holeshot, but the focus quickly shifted behind him. A collision at Turn 1 immediately brought drama, taking out championship leader Daniel Holgado along with home favourite Joe Roberts, ending their races almost before they had begun.
The chaos didn’t stop there. Later on the opening lap, a major multi-rider incident at Turn 11 involved Filip Salac, Angel Piqueras, David Alonso, Collin Veijer, Sergio Garcia, Daniel Muñoz and Alberto Ferrandez. The severity of the crash forced race control to bring out the red flag.
Piqueras and Ferrandez were taken for medical checks, while the remaining riders returned to the grid for a shortened 10-lap restart.
Restart reshuffles the race
Before the restart, several penalties were issued. Holgado was penalised for causing the initial collision, while Muñoz and Barry Baltus received Long Lap penalties for unsafe riding. Deniz Öncü also had a scare, crashing on the sighting lap, though he managed to take part in the restart.
When the race resumed, Lopez once again made a strong getaway, but Baltus quickly challenged and briefly took the lead at Turn 13—despite still needing to serve his penalty. Behind them, Agius wasted no time, moving into second place before making a decisive pass on Baltus at Turn 12 on Lap 3 to take control of the race.
Mid-race battles and comeback rides
As the race settled, Vietti began to make his move. After passing Guevara, he overtook Lopez at Turn 1 and started to close in on the lead. Meanwhile, Baltus briefly reclaimed first place before serving his Long Lap penalty, dropping him down the order.
One of the standout rides came from David Alonso, who mounted an impressive recovery from 17th on the grid. Within a few laps, he had climbed into the top five, showcasing strong pace and aggressive overtaking.
At the front, Vietti eventually hit the lead along the long back straight, using the slipstream to his advantage. Agius attempted to respond immediately but couldn’t make a move stick at first, setting up a tense battle in the closing laps.
Decisive final laps
With just two laps remaining, Agius made his move. Diving into Turn 3, he reclaimed the lead with a bold and well-judged overtake. From there, he pushed hard to create a small gap heading into the final lap.
Vietti responded with a strong final lap, closing the distance and applying pressure right to the finish. However, Agius remained calm and controlled, defending effectively to cross the line first and secure a well-earned victory.
Guevara completed the podium, continuing his solid start to the season with another consistent performance.
Final positions and championship implications
Behind the top three, Alonso’s remarkable charge earned him fourth place, one of the standout performances of the race. Manuel Gonzalez finished fifth, a result that was enough to move him into the championship lead.
Baltus recovered to sixth despite his penalty, finishing ahead of Lopez. Alex Escrig held off Roberts for eighth, with the American rider doing well to recover after the earlier incident. Tony Arbolino rounded out the top ten.
