Ortola fends off Alonso and Veijer for vital victory

Ivan Ortola (MT Helmets – MSI) triumphed with a spectacular victory at the Monster Energy British Grand Prix, following a fierce Moto3™ battle at Silverstone. David Alonso (CFMOTO Valresa Aspar Team) secured second place in a nail-biting finish, while Collin Veijer (Liqui Moly Husqvarna Intact GP) completed the podium, with just 0.103 seconds separating the top three.

Joel Kelso (BOE Motorsports) seized the holeshot from the front row, leading a Moto3™ freight train. However, the home crowd was disappointed when Scott Ogden (Fibre Tec Honda – MLav Racing) couldn’t avoid Angel Piqueras’ stricken Leopard Racing Honda at Turn 18 on Lap 2, ending his British GP prematurely.

Up front, Daniel Holgado (Red Bull GASGAS Tech3) briefly led the race. As the final six laps approached, Ortola attempted to break away, creating a 0.4-second gap. But the chasing pack quickly reeled him back in.

The closing laps were a chaotic scramble for positions. On the last lap, Veijer initially held the lead, but Alonso, who had been pushed to fourth, made an impressive move at Brooklands to climb to second. Ortola, however, reclaimed the lead at Copse.

Heading into the final sector, Veijer dropped to third, and the race down the Hangar Straight saw Ortola narrowly maintain first place. Alonso made a daring inside move at Vale to snatch second from Veijer, with Ortola holding on to win despite running wide at Turn 16.

Holgado finished fourth, just 0.107 seconds from victory, and Stefano Nepa (LEVELUP – MTA) secured his best finish of 2024 in fifth. Ryusei Yamanaka (MT Helmets – MSI) in sixth and Kelso in seventh were also within a second of the win. Adrian Fernandez (Leopard Racing), Jose Antonio Rueda (Red Bull KTM Ajo), and Tatsuki Suzuki (Liqui Moly Husqvarna Intact GP) rounded out the top ten at Silverstone.

This thrilling race leaves Alonso heading to the Red Bull Ring with a 53-point lead over Ortola in the Championship. What excitement awaits us in Austria?
