Drama-Filled Showdown Opener at Oulton Park: Kyle Ryde Triumphs as Tommy Bridewell Crashes Out

The first race of the Showdown in Round Nine of the British Superbike Championship at Oulton Park was filled with action from start to finish. Kyle Ryde fought back to claim victory after Tommy Bridewell crashed out early in the race. Bridewell exited the race on the first lap at Hizzys, leaving the door open for an intense battle for the lead.

Josh Brookes seized the early advantage, overtaking pole-sitter Ryde, with Glenn Irwin moving to the front by lap four. Ryde settled into a comfortable third, which soon became a lead trio as Leon Haslam fell behind. Ryde faced an unexpected challenge on lap 11 when a loose dash protector on his Yamaha forced him to pull to the grass to remove it, losing two seconds and dropping back towards Lee Jackson.

Using the setback as motivation, Ryde put in a series of fastest laps to reclaim his position in the lead group. The turning point came when Brookes made a move on Irwin, allowing Ryde to capitalize with a decisive maneuver to take the lead heading into Knickerbrook.

Ryde held on during the final lap, securing his first-ever win at Oulton Park. Irwin’s aggressive move on Brookes solidified his place as the main challenger, but he finished just 0.303 seconds behind Ryde. This race ended a nine-race podium drought for Irwin, who claimed second place.

Lee Jackson, who had qualified sixth but dropped to eighth at the start, fought back to complete the podium for MasterMac Honda. Brookes, racing for FHO Racing BMW Motorrad, was edged out of the podium positions in the final laps, finishing fourth—matching his best result of the season.

Ryan Vickers overcame setup issues to move from seventh on the grid to finish fifth after a late pass on Leon Haslam, who came in sixth for ROKiT Haslam Racing BMW Motorrad. Danny Kent secured seventh for McAMS Yamaha, followed by Peter Hickman in eighth. Jason O’Halloran crossed the line in ninth as the top Kawasaki for Completely Motorbikes, with teammate Max Cook rounding out the top ten.

Rory Skinner finished eleventh for Cheshire Mouldings, holding a significant gap over Andrew Irwin in twelfth for Honda. The remaining points went to Billy McConnell (13th), Storm Stacey (14th), and Bradley Perie (15th). Richard Kerr narrowly missed out on points in 16th, while Fraser Rogers was classified 17th after a penalty issue. Brayden Elliott was the final finisher.

This thrilling race sets the stage for an exciting conclusion to the 2024 Bennetts Superbike Championship.
